APIPS:
HSAG Wins Patient Safety Award
The Arizona Partnership for Implementing Patient Safety (APIPS)
has awarded its Organizational Award to HSAG for the company's
continued leadership in creating initiatives that promote
patient safety.
The Award, one of seven that recognize individuals and
organizations in Arizona for significant contributions to
patient safety, was presented to HSAG in August. Others
receiving Organizational Awards included the Arizona Hospital
and Healthcare Association and the Safe and Sound Patient Safety
Initiative, which is developing tools to help health care
providers create a safer health care environment.
HSAG's award, under the Partnership in Patient
Safety category, credits the company for working with other organizations
or individuals to initiate patient safety programs that have
made a measurable difference in Arizona. This was the first year
for the APIPS awards.
To be eligible, candidates had to demonstrate a clear link
between their accomplishments and one or more of the APIPS
goals, which include not only safer health care but
strengthening communication and collaboration among health care
professionals; increasing consumer awareness and participation
in improvement efforts; and providing professional education and
resource materials.
APIPS evolved from an Arizona Medical Association patient
safety task force and is now a broad coalition of health care
professionals who are committed to a safe health care
environment for all Arizonans. Among the APIPS projects
involving HSAG was the development of a medication form known as
The Med Form, which was designed to reduce medication errors by
promoting communication between consumers and their
caregivers. The Med Form was included in a May 2006 Wall
Street Journal story about preventing medication errors and
was recognized by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement's
100,000 Lives Campaign.
APIPS includes participants from health care organizations,
hospitals, health plans, medical groups, government health care
boards and agencies, and advocacy groups, among others
