HSAG Founder Receives Lifetime Achievement Award
The
Arizona Chapter of the American College of Physicians (ACP) presented
its 2004 Laureate Award to Lawrence J. Shapiro, MD, HSAG President
and Chairman of the HSAG Board of Directors, at its annual scientific
meeting. The meeting, titled “Habits of Excellence,”
was held October 22–24 in Scottsdale.
The Laureate Award is presented to “long-standing and
loyal supporters of the College who have rendered distinguished
service to their chapters and community and have upheld the high
ideals and professional standards for which the College is known.”
Throughout his distinguished 35-year career, Dr. Shapiro maintained
a private gastroenterology practice in Phoenix while serving the
medical community in leadership roles for Arizona Medicare quality
improvement activities. Dr. Shapiro was one of the principal founders
of HSAG in 1979.
The Chapter also posthumously presented the 2004 Volunteerism
Award to Oscar
S. Gluck, MD, FACP, FACR. Dr. Gluck served on the HSAG Consumer
Advisory Council (CAC), representing the Arizona Latin-American
Medical Association. He founded and served as director of the
Arizona Rheumatology Center and was a clinical professor for the
Division of Rheumatology at the University of Arizona. Dr. Gluck
died of a heart attack on July 23 of this year.
