Ensuring Quality: At Work and at Home
For three HSAG employees, it’s OK to take their work home
and share it with others. That is, because they like to do so.
Coding experts Patience Hoag, Julia Lunn and Ardie Ostrom take
their experience outside of the workplace to benefit those just
starting the quest for quality.
Hoag,
Lunn and Ostrom are important members of the HSAG team.
Hoag is a project leader on the State and Corporate team,
while Lunn and Ostrom both work on the Federal team. Lunn is
an interventions specialist, and Ostrom serves as the project manager
for case review. But in their “spare” time, the three
play another important role in health care quality—the role
of a volunteer.
All three are members of the American
Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), an association
that has been assisting medical coders for over 75 years. Each
also volunteers
for AHIMA, both on the state and national level.
In fact, Hoag is currently on the ballot for the national
Council on Accreditation, which establishes, maintains and promotes
appropriate standards of quality for educational programs. She
also previously served as president for AHIMA at the state level.
Hoag recently was the recipient of the Golden Code Award at
the national level and also just received the Distinguished Leadership
Award at the state level. “I love to mentor new professionals
and get them in the mix,” she said.
Lunn is no stranger to the same types of leadership and awards.
She was a recipient of the Leadership Award and previously served
as president at the state level. She also shares her expertise
with students at Phoenix
College. “The need is there for people to be well educated
in our field,” said Lunn. “Our job is to promote
them and help them grow.”
Ostrom shares many of the same experiences. She previously received
the Distinguished Member Award twice at the state level and has
served on the state board for six years in different capacities.
Ardie also teaches at Phoenix College. “I get more out of
it than the time I put into it,” said Ostrom of her teaching
and involvement with AHIMA.
HSAG appreciates the quality work Hoag, Lunn and Ostrom provide
on a daily basis. But even more so, we appreciate their dedication
to health care quality across the board.
