Translating VTE Guidelines Into Practice
Overview
Venous thromboembolism (VTE) has been identified as one of the most preventable
causes of hospital-patient death. While evidence-based consensus guidelines for
identifying hospital patients at risk for VTE have been available for over a decade,
hospital medical patients are still not routinely screened for VTE risk or provided
with appropriate prophylaxis to prevent VTE.
The goal of HSAG's "Translating VTE Guidelines Into Practice" project—funded
by sanofi-aventis, U.S.—was to develop and pilot test quality improvement
tools and strategies that will improve providers' adherence to guidelines for VTE
risk-assessment and appropriate prophylaxis for medical patients. These tools and
strategies are now available in the HSAG VTE Resource Kit.

Surgeon
General's "Call to Action to Prevent Deep Vein Thrombosis and Pulmonary Embolism"
The Surgeon General's Call to Action urges a coordinated, multifaceted plan to reduce
the numbers of cases of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism nationwide.
The plan emphasizes the need for increased awareness, evidence-based practices,
and more research on the causes, prevention, and treatment of deep vein thrombosis.
Resources at the Surgeon General's Web site include the Sept. 15, 2008, press release;
the 49-page Call-to-Action plan; fact sheets; a resource list; and the agenda and
presentations from the May 2006 Surgeon General's Workshop on Deep Vein Thrombosis.
Premier: Venous Thromboembolism
Premier Inc. is a hospital performance improvement alliance with 1,700 participating
not-for-profit hospitals and health systems serving communities nationwide. 200
hospitals and health systems created and entirely own the Premier alliance. Premier's

SHM offers the VTE Prevention Collaborative, a program that offers two types of
individualized assistance to hospitalists wishing to take the lead on this critical

The Coalition to Prevent
Deep-Vein Thrombosis
Mission: To reduce the immediate and long-term dangers of deep-vein thrombosis and
pulmonary embolism (PE), which together comprise one of the nation's leading causes
of death. The Coalition will educate the public, healthcare professionals, and policy-makers
about risk factors, symptoms, and signs associated with DVT, as well as identify
evidence-based measures to prevent morbidity and mortality from DVT and PE.
