John Sorboro, MD, ABPN

As HSAG’s Chief Medical Officer, Behavioral Health, Dr. Sorboro provides leadership and direction on activities focused on improving overall behavioral health for Medicare beneficiaries and Medicaid members. He provides subject matter expertise for opioid-related initiatives designed to decrease opioid misuse and improve behavioral health outcomes. Dr. Sorboro also serves as a subject matter expert to support opioid stewardship programs and lead focused workgroups. He provides in-person and virtual peer education to spread best practices on opioid prescribing and treatment of substance use disorders. He has more than 30 years of experience as a practicing physician specializing in general and addiction psychiatry, including more than 15 years of expertise in behavioral health quality improvement, healthcare transformation, value-based purchasing, medical management, population health, and managed care for Medicaid populations. He has held the position of medical director for medical/psychiatric hospitals, medical centers, and clinics for inpatient and outpatient treatment. Dr. Sorboro received his undergraduate degree from the University of Akron, and his medical degree from the Medical College of Ohio at Toledo—receiving honors in psychiatry, emergency medicine, radiology and an award singling him out as its finest student in neurology. He completed his residency at the Cleveland Clinic Department of Psychiatry and Psychology. Dr. Sorboro is a licensed physician in Arizona and Ohio, is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, and is a member of the American Society of Addiction Medicine.
