(HIIN-Level Event) Exploring Safety Across the Board (registration link sent via listserv)

Summary from 6/1 Pacing Event: “HIIN Leadership and Staff Event: Exploring Safety Across the Board”

This HIIN Leadership and Staff Pacing Event explored Safety Across the Board (SAB) in an effort towards developing an operational definition for use in the Partnership. This event was hosted in collaboration with the SAB Affinity Group, which is co-led by Tania Daniels, PT, MBA (Minnesota HIIN) and Lynda Martin, RN, BSN, MPA (Premier HIIN). Specifically, this event provided an interactive session in which HIINs heard, shared, and discussed how SAB is currently defined in their work. Participants reviewed and discussed a drafted list of the elements that constitute SAB, including sharing thoughts about existing gaps.

To help set the stage for this interactive discussion, this session featured Tejal Gandhi, MD, MPH, CPPS, Chief Clinical and Safety Officer at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) and former President and CEO of NPSF, who discussed the NPSF’s “Free from Harm” recommendations and their newly-developed “Leading a Culture of Safety: A Blueprint for Success” as these relate to the importance of a culture of safety that seeks to prevent patient harm. Representatives from the New Jersey, HRET, Washington, and Premier HIINs shared aspects of their work and thinking on SAB. In addition, CMS’ Shelly Coyle, RN, MS, MBA, discussed the alignment between the PfP work, the “Free from Harm” recommendations, and the CMS Quality Strategy.

HIIN leaders and staff are encouraged to help continue this dialogue and solidify the operational definition of Safety Across the Board by joining the SAB Affinity Group’s next meeting on Tuesday, July 18th, from 12:30 PM – 1:30 PM ET.
