An Update on Antibiotic Stewardship: Progress, Resources, and Exploring Stewardship Strategies for Antibiotics and Opioids

This HIIN and hospital Pacing Event will discuss progress in the uptake of the CDC’s Core Elements in the inpatient setting and provide an update on the CDC resources available to HIINs and hospitals in the reduction of harms such as C. diff and MRSA. In addition, this session will examine similarities and differences in stewardship efforts related to antibiotics and opioids.

This Pacing Event discussed progress made in the uptake of the CDC’s Core Elements of Hospital Antibiotic Stewardship Programs and provided an update on the CDC resources available to HIINs and hospitals for driving success in the reduction of harms such as C. diff and MRSA. In addition, this session explored similarities and differences in stewardship efforts related to antibiotics and opioids. Speakers discussed current thinking around the overlap between these and how hospitals are leveraging antibiotic stewardship successes in their work to address pain management.

This guest speakers for this event included:

Melinda Neuhauser, PharmD, MPH, Pharmacist and Acute Care Lead, Office of Antibiotic Stewardship, Division of Healthcare Quality Promotion, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, who provided an update on the implementation of the Core Elements in the inpatient setting, discussed updates to the NHSN antibiotic use module, and shared available resources for HIINs and hospitals to use in their work.

Jane Brock, MD, MSPH, and Abisola Abolude, MA, from the QIN-QIO National Coordinating Center (NCC), who shared the results of their analyses comparing antibiotic and opioid prescribing patterns and how the similarities and differences in the findings can be useful in the HIINs’ work.

Anna Legreid Dopp, PharmD, from the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP), who further explored thinking around the overlap between antibiotic stewardship and opioid stewardship and how hospitals are leveraging the similarities in their work.
