Summary from 8/8 PFE Learning Event: “Recruiting and Training Patient and Family Advisors for Councils and Committees: The Role of HIPAA”

For many hospitals, the decision to partner with PFAs on developing policies and procedures (PFE Metric 4) and in governance decisions (PFE Metric 5) can raise questions about how best to protect personal health information. For example, will the hospital violate the HIPAA privacy rule if they contact former patients about becoming a PFA? These concerns are especially relevant to small and critical access hospitals located in tight-knit communities.

This PFE learning event provided an overview of how HIPAA connects with PFE Metrics 4 & 5 and shared best practices for ensuring that HIPAA regulations are not violated when recruiting, training, and partnering with PFAs.
