Alcohol and drug use in older adults is an increasing problem. Baby boomers used more alcohol and drugs when they were younger than other cohorts, and some are showing a late-life onset of substance use.
SBIRT (Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment) is a public health approach that utilizes a standardized screening to determine substance use risk, brief intervention for patients with risky substance use, and more effective referral-to-treatment strategies for patients who may have a substance use disorder.
The goal of this webinar, presented by Heather J. Gotham, PhD, is to help participants develop their knowledge about using SBIRT with older adults and provide resources for further learning and help, including:
Explain the process for screening older adults for substance use and determining level of risk.
Understand the steps of a brief intervention based on motivational interviewing techniques.
Describe strategies for effectively referring older adults to addiction treatment.
