SBIRT: How to Talk to Older Adult Patients About Substance Use

Alcohol and drug use in older adults is an increasing problem. Baby boomers used more alcohol and drugs when they were younger than other cohorts, and some are showing a late-life onset of substance use.

SBIRT (Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment) is a public health approach that utilizes a standardized screening to determine substance use risk, brief intervention for patients with risky substance use, and more effective referral-to-treatment strategies for patients who may have a substance use disorder.

The goal of this webinar, presented by Heather J. Gotham, PhD, is to help participants develop their knowledge about using SBIRT with older adults and provide resources for further learning and help, including:

  • Explain the process for screening older adults for substance use and determining level of risk.

  • Understand the steps of a brief intervention based on motivational interviewing techniques.

  • Describe strategies for effectively referring older adults to addiction treatment.

About the Speaker
Heather J. Gotham, PhD, is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist, specializing in substance use disorder treatment and an Associate Research Professor within the Collaborative for Excellence in Behavioral Health Research and Practice at the University of Missouri-Kansas City’s (UMKC) School of Nursing and Health Studies. She is the Project Director of the UMKC SBIRT project to infuse SBIRT training into nursing, social work, medicine, and dentistry curricula. Dr. Gotham’s work focuses on implementing evidence-based behavioral health treatments and assessments for adolescents and adults, SBIRT, and treatment fidelity for co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders. She provides technical assistance to systems, states and treatment providers to implement evidence-based practices and assessments.
