According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention up to 70 percent of nursing home residents received one or more courses of systemic antibiotics in a year, and 40 percent to 75 percent of antibiotics prescribed in nursing homes may be unnecessary or inappropriate. Also, 30 to 60 percent of antibiotics used in skilled nursing facilities are prescribed for suspected urinary tract infections (UTIs).
