Study Reveals Reducing Overtreatment in Diabetes and Hypertension Can Improve Health

Medical Team Looking at Xray Provider in Home with Senior Patients

A Veterans Administration study published in JAMA Internal Medicine evaluated the association between blood pressure or HbA1c levels and medication deintensification in older patients with diabetes. Researchers found that for older people, more medication could pose more side effects and fewer benefits. Healthcare providers are advised to assess patients’ clinical performance and avoid unnecessary treatment on patients. Among older patients whose treatment resulted in very low levels of HbA1c or blood pressure, 27 percent or fewer underwent deintensification, representing a lost opportunity to reduce overtreatment.
