As published in Nature Biomedical Engineering journal, an artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm created by Google AI and Verily Life Sciences (an Alphabet subsidiary that spun off from Google) can predict whether a patient is likely to suffer a major cardiovascular event like a heart attack or stroke within five years, based on a photo of their retina. Specifically, the images focused on retinal fundus images—pictures of blood vessels in the eye. Using the eye scan, Google’s algorithm was able to predict whether a person would experience a major cardiac event or stroke 70 percent of the time. Read more in the Business Insider article.
